Paragraph adalah bagian dari
sebuah tulisan yang berisi kumpulan kalimat, Paragraph merupakan istilah lain
dari alinea. Oleh karenanya paragraph dapat diberikan pengertian sebagai suatu
bentuk pengungkapan gagasan yang terjalin dalam rangkaian beberapa kalimat.
Bagian-bagian dari paragraph:
1. Topic Sentence
Topic sentence bisa dikatakan
sebagai kalimat pertama dalam sebuah paragraph. Fungsi dari topic sentence ini
adalah memperkenalkan main idea atau ide utama dalam sebuah paragraph.
Contoh:
There are three reasons why
Canada is one of the best countries in the world. First, Canada has an
excellent health care system. All Canadians have access to medical services at a
reasonable price. Second, Canada has a high standard of education. Students are
taught by well-trained teachers and are encouraged to continue studying at
university. Finally, Canada's cities are clean and efficiently managed.
Canadian cities have many parks and lots of space for people to live. As a
result, Canada is a desirable place to live.
2. Supporting Details
Supporting detail berisikan
kalimat-kalimat yang mendudukung atau memperjelas main idea dari sebuah
paragraph dan letaknya setelah topic
sentence. Supporting Details ini bisa dikatakan sebagai body pada sebuah paragraph. Bagian ini bisa
berisikan details atau rincian-rincian, contoh-contoh ataupun fakta-fakta.

Closing Sentence adalah kalimat
terakhir pada sebuah paragraph. Closing sentence merupakan kalimat yang
merekapitulasi atau menyatakan kembali main idea dengan bahasa yang berbeda. Disamping
itu, closing sentence bisa sebagai kalimat transisi sebelum memasuki paragraph selanjutnya.
